A New Beginning

October 02, 2016
After spending two weeks in Port Angeles, waiting for my broken phone to be repaired, I received an email that my phone was being shipped to Seattle. I had actually become quite comfortable in Port Angeles, it had almost started to feel like home. I even had a schedule for the first time in months. I spent my last night in town Couchsurfing with my...

The Coast

September 17, 2016
I ended up staying in Astoria for a few days, this was easily my favorite city I had visited on the roadtrip. But I knew I had to get moving, so I drove down to Ecola State Park one last time. I wanted to get some cool shots of the coast here, before heading up into Washington. I think I did pretty well! I even met a girl who worked at a nearby...

Goonies

September 17, 2016
As I walked through the rainforest I could hear the waves crashing against the shore less than a mile away. A heavy blanket of fog had fallen over the coast. The forest was completely covered in ferns and moss, even the branches had ferns growing on them! I soon reached Indian Point and saw the Pacific Ocean for the first time. It stretched out to...

Headed to the Coast

September 17, 2016
With Glacier National Park behind me, I was excited to finally reach the Pacific Ocean. Of course, things didn't work out quite as planned. When I arrived in Spokane, Washington I realized that Palouse Falls was not too far away. I also learned that Steptoe Butte, which offers an incredible view of seemingly endless farmland, was on the way there....

Glacier National Park

September 01, 2016
Arrival After a beautiful morning drive through central Montana, filled with storms and rainbows, I saw the mountains of Glacier National Park on the horizon. I approached East Glacier by 7:30am, the early morning light slowly fading as dark clouds began to fill the sky. The weather was damp and cold in East Glacier, no warmer than 50 degrees. A...

Grand Tetons

August 15, 2016
After spending the first 35 days of my roadtrip in Colorado, I was ready to move on to Wyoming. The 8+ hour drive from Colorado to Wyoming was an interesting one. Google Maps took me through the middle of nowhere in Northwest Colorado. I saw maybe 3 other people on the road in 4 hours of travel time. Eventually Google told me to turn onto a dirt ro...

Maroon Bells

August 01, 2016
For my last Colorado hike I wanted to do a backcountry trip. The area around Crested Butte provided endless possibilities. I learned of a route through the mountains that would take me from Crested Butte to Aspen. I was unable to find a good paper map, so I decided to wing it. At 6pm I left Crested Butte and drove up towards Gothic. The forest was...

Monsoon

July 22, 2016
“You get monsoons in the desert?” While I was staying with my new friends in Mesa Verde, our friend John mentioned that Monsoon Season was finally here. The county had been under a fire ban for the past few weeks and everything was bone dry. Everyone in WOBville was hoping for some rain so they would finally lift the fire ban. I never imagined t...

A Change of Scenery

July 19, 2016
This past weekend I was able to visit New Mexico, Arizona, Utah and head back to Colorado all in one morning. After my night at Shiprock I drove up into Arizona then veered north to the Four Corners Monument. It was really interesting to see the desert environments here, which felt so completely different than anything I've seen on the trip so far.

The Desert

July 16, 2016
After a relaxing day in Durango, spent down by the river, I decided to drive over to Mesa Verde National Park. It was interesting to see the ancient dwellings of the native people. I'm sure my archaeologist friends would love to explore this place! I was able to go on a tour of the Cliff Palace area with a really cool ranger. He shed some light on...

The Passing Time

I recommend listening to this song while you read this blog post and view the pictures from the Great Sand Dunes. It really captures the essence of being alone at night on the Dunes, under a sea of stars. As I entered the San Luis Valley, one of the largest desert valleys in the world, I could see the Great Sand Dunes off in the distance. In fac...

Back in Boulder

July 08, 2016
I am currently in Boulder, Colorado finishing up my backlog of edits and preparing for the next part of the journey. Tomorrow I will head to the Great Sand Dunes, where I'll hopefully be able to capture some great Milky Way and Star Trails photos. After spending a few days exploring the area, my favorite place in Boulder, so far, is the Chautauqua...

The Moose, The Fox, and the Chipmunk

July 01, 2016
As I was walking up the North Inlet Trail at sunset, I crossed paths with a fellow adventurer who was spending 11 days exploring Colorado. She was heading out to her car while I was heading into the backcountry. She had been setting up camp nearby when a tree fell down right next to her tent! Thankfully she wasn't hurt. Most of the trees on the Wes...

Into the Mountains

June 29, 2016
After 4 days without a good nights sleep I finally had a backcountry campsite. Mill Creek Basin is a wonderful spot between Bear Lake and Moraine Park. There is a large meadow with Aspen trees growing throughout. A small stream flows nearby. I had actually stayed at this campsite two years ago. That night however, was very short. I had to wake up b...

Day 1

June 26, 2016
Day 1 After a nearly sleepless night in my car, I awoke at dawn. I was in the Moraine Park area, a large meadow surrounded by mountains. With no idea what to do, I started driving. Within a minute I came upon a large herd of Elk having breakfast alongside the road. Continuing on, I noticed a group of photographers in the meadow. I pulled over and w...
